History

Moi University was first established in 1984, as the second university in Kenya. The first year, its only department consisted of a transfer of the Department of Forestry at University of Nairobi, and a total of 83 students. The university's school of medicine, opened in 1996, was the second one established in Kenya. The University shed off some of its campuses to become full-fledged universities, notably Garissa University College, which unfortunately made headlines after a terrorist attack. Still, Moi University has turned controversial in recent past, fighting closure of its schools and accreditation of courses. It's an expectation that it will return soon to its exponential growth days.
